about
Skullcrusher, Originally recorded in 1970 by ‘Iron Claw’ a very young band of lad’s from Dumfries, Scotland. Written by Mike Waller and Alex Wilson in November 1970 & recorded less than a month later in London, England in December of 1970 on a 4-Track Reel-To-Reel tape machine. If you havent heard the original version already, Go listen to it now! But be warned, it was a very raw, lo-fi demo sounding recording that 99% of the world never heard, until 2009 when it was included on an Iron Claw reissue LP put out by the Rockadrome label.
The Sister Midnight version is only slightly less 'raw' than the original but hopefully retains some of the dark, doomy, youthful simplicity of the 1970 version, without sounding 'slick' or 'digital'. The chugging riff & Relentless beat, throbbing Tele Bass line & almost 'crooning' yet dissonant melodic vocals, drowned in reverb make this a stand out track in any decade, let alone the early 1970s.
True SabbathWorshipers need to pay respect.
This song is, IMHO, one of the finest examples of early 70’s UK Proto-Metal. Even extending into the realm of Proto-Goth/Death-Rock and of course, a strong precursor to the Doom Metal/Stoner Rock genre we know today.
